Very sorry to hear this. Herb sat behind me in study hall in my sophomore year. Very pleasant, friendly, likeable young man. Condolences to his family and friends.

Joseph Ekenstierna

A long time friend that fought a long battle with cancer, retired from Suffolk County Police Department as a Sargent on highway patrol, was also a US marine who spent time in Vietnam. I will miss talking to him

Sad news indeed.  I 1st met Herb in the summer before 9th grade.  I remember one of the 1st things he said to me, "I could kick your butt".  I thought that was an odd thing to say to somebody you just met, but we became friends anyway.  Then he broke my leg.  Nah, it wasn't him.  1st week after graduation, I ran into him @ a gas station.  It was a soggy day, I was on my motorcycle, he was in a car.  We decided to go to my house & hang out, so off we went, with me following on Laurel Ave.  Meanwhile Joey Ekenstierna is headed in the opposite direction in his VW, sees his pal Herb & pulls a quick U turn.  He doesn't see his other pal, me.  So I fixed him & took his front bumper off, with my leg.  Spent the rest of the summer in a cast.  I wonder if that had anything to do with Herb's career choice.  I really liked Herb but sadly lost track of him & just about everybody for that matter.  I still ride motorcycle, so I fled the Island, afraid Joe would get me for breaking his VW. ;-)  If I had known Herb was there serving to protect us, maybe I could have stayed?
